X.6016. INCREASED CHARGE SWITCHING X.7730.

Thank you for your memo. EFCL/ADL8.1.30.

Your proposal for modifying the switchbox, for the scheme using a resistance in series with the dynamo field to reduce the charge, appears to us to be very good and very simple.

It is much more easily introduced than a change-over contact on the back end of the lamp switch.

Thereis, however, the possibility with this modification that the headlamp switch could be left on and the charge switched off with the car still running, which would leave one end of the dynamo field still connected to the battery positive, but no doubt you have examined any possible harm that might arise from this.

Regarding your second proposal to transfer the charge switching to the lamp side, we agree it would be a good thing to get rid of the auxiliary magneto switch but this scheme appears to us to be open to the objection that the lamp switch would in many cases be left permanently in the "charge" position.

It could, of course, be mechanically or electrically interlocked with the ignition switch but this would introduce additional complication.

After all the auxiliary switch is only used for testing purposes and the troubles you have experienced are due rather to the use of an unsuitable switch.

We have withheld sending anything to R.{Sir Henry Royce} before dealing with the switching problem so as to present the proposal in as complete a form as possible.

We attach herewith a print of a drawing we are making up to shew the electrical connections.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
