X.6088. PRODUCTION TEST OF PHANTOM II
MEDIUM OUTPUT DYNAMO
WITH 48 COIL ARMATURE.

Answering your By {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} /RD7/N28.1.31, careful consideration was given to the matter before introducing in the production test the clauses to which you take objection.

This blackening is a phenomenon which has been more or less always with us and one for which a remedy is constantly being sought. So far we have excluded any mention of blackening on the specification of Test but now we consider that in view of the reduction of output which takes place in service subsequently to the production tests, due allowance should be made in the original setting, as is now included in the setting we give and the specification should be made out accordingly.

The point is that this phenomenon should be recognised as occurring and it should duly be taken into consideration in passing out machines on production.

The results of experiments we have in hand specifically to overcome this trouble are not likely to be available at an early date --- in fact one may say of brush experiments generally that there is little opportunity of conducting these so long as experimental work on the main dynamo problem is in progress. There is, however, the possibility that a change in the phenomenon may automatically take place as a result of other modifications embarked upon for other reasons e.g. the new armature of greater internal reluctance.
