i.e., exhaust gas for the standard system, steam for the super-heated and water for the simple water system - increase when starting from cold. By average temperature is meant the mean of the inlet and outlet temperatures of the hot spot.
The exhaust temperatures were taken with thermo couples.
Although the rate of heat to the charge at any instant is approx. proportional to the temperature difference on each side of the hot spot, there will be a considerably greater temperature drop between the hot exhaust gas and the walls of the hot spot than between the water and the hot spot. Examining these curves without remembering this fact would lead us to suppose contd:-
