With reference to RYD/C.27.6.34. We have a drawing of the Bentley gudgeon pin button dated 29.9.28. We agree that this has more taper on it than our present button. On the other hand our existing gudgeon pin plug was copied exactly from a model supplied by Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} which he stated had given satisfaction. Furthermore, in over 100,000 miles experimental running on the road and several thousand hours on the test bed we have never experienced any trouble from these buttons. We did not see the actual parts where the buttons had worn badly, but can only conclude that the piston seized first, scored the cylinder, and that the rapid wearing away of the button was due to the rough condition of the cylinder face. Another point about the Bentley drawing of the button is that it shows a .422" hole down the centre. We understand that we have already tried this size hole and abandoned it on production. We do not think, therefore, that we should consider bringing this alteration on production until we have carried out a considerable amount of running with it. In the meantime if any further evidence comes to light we should like to have the opportunity of examining the pieces. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
