Bentley III - Independent Front Suspension
Side Steering Tube.

We send herewith N.Sch.4920 showing the side steering tube for the Bentley III independent front suspension.

The joint at the rear end is identical with that for Wraith II. By using this joint we make the steering column and pendulum lever identical also with Wraith II.

The front joint follows the design of that used on Wraith II and Phantom III, the ball diameter being the same as the present Bentley. It is at this joint that friction is most useful in preventing low speed wobble. We have provided a spring giving a load of 200 lbs, and if it is found necessary the top ball pad should be split.

We understand that it would save a considerable amount of money in the Works if the side steering tube (and also the cross steering tube) was made adjustable.

We show a type of screw adjustment very commonly used and a tube with a butted end.

We have asked the Order Office to ascertain for us what extra cost the butting will entail. Should the increased cost due to butting be excessive we have several alternative schemed which might be used but which we feel are not quite so desirable as the one we show.
