Issues with undershield clearances and the cross member on the Goshawk model.

Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} X.4272 E1/M1.6.22. GOSHAWK - UNDERSHIELD CLEARANCES X.4272. We send you herewith drawing No.LeC.1593 dealing with the front end of the undershield. On the Goshawk here we find that the undershield was erected at the front end with the lip underneath the cross member, whereas it was intended to have been above the bottom flange of the cross member, to avoid scooping in dust and mud. We can see on this particular car, owing to the peculiar shape of the front cross member that it is not possible to put the undershield up with the lip inside. We have therefore made an alteration to the design which will in future simplify this job. The material of the undershield should not have no lap at this point, but a slight gap is shewn on LeC. 1593, and the undershield will then be independent of variations in the cross member. The cross member on the Goshawk here is not parallel; it measures 4.225 deep in the middle, and 4.075 at each end of the deep part, whereas it should be 4.250 parallel. There is also a very thick packing piece, .225 deep, put in where the cross member is fixed to the side channel. As the limits on the side channel of the cross member would be about .060 each for the depth dimentions, we expect that on production chassis the packing piece need not exceed a thickness of .125.
