Ascertain if the cotton fabric is better than leather for engaging, and also if it will stand a higher temperature. [Handwritten note next to a bracket enclosing the following paragraph: This need not now be tried.] 2nd. We might try the string lined clutch proposed some time ago. The cord should be say 1/8" diameter and should be sunk in grooves. It should be taken through holes and exposed for a length of 1" and kept on the inside for a length of 1/2". The holes should be staggered. 3rd. A better scheme than the above, and one which should be tried, is to use tape 3/4" x 3/16" woven on a bias, thus - [Drawing of a curved tape] to suit the curvature of the cone. It should be sunk in grooves, and as much as possible should be laid on the cone.
