To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}: 26115 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}22/KW.15.1.35. Noisy Windscreen Wipers on 5-B-IV. These wipers are standard Klaxon wipers, and the actuating boxes and drives are built in by the coachbuilders. On dismantling them it was found that most of the objectionable noise was due to three causes - (1) The coachbuilders had not cut away sufficient wood to allow the intermediate drive to find its own alignment, so the drive was running out of truth and fouling the outer casing. The wood was cut away and there was an improvement in noise. (2) The rack which changes the direction of the wiper in the actuating box was fouling the drive when over one way, thus adding extra load to the gearing and causing it to be noisy. In this case it was necessary to fit a washer under the rack, and lift it up to give a clearance. (3) There was very little grease in the other actuating box. This was refilled. Whilst there was at least a 50% improvement after attending to these complaints, there was still a dry noise from the main flexible drive. As it is necessary from the position of the motor and the actuating boxes to have several bends in this drive, it is very difficult to keep it from fouling the outer casing, thus adding to the noise.
