REAR END OF 'SS{S. Smith}' CHASSIS. + 7400

The position at the moment is that the next car it is proposed to send to France will have fitted to it two spare wheels at the rear, but instead of being carried on shoes, will be carried on a dummy hub. R.{Sir Henry Royce} favoured this scheme in place of the shoe scheme which ran a 10,000 miles test on 18-EX.

The chief advantage in the dummy hub scheme is that it accommodates various sizes of tyre without difficulty. This scheme of course still leaves us without a luggage grid. We have received from DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} a scheme for one spare wheel and luggage grid as shewn on N.Sch.2799. We have not received instructions for this yet from the D.O., but BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} anticipates sending out all the drgs. in two or three days. As soon as we have this scheme we will arrange to fit it on to one of the cars.

We also discussed the various schemes shewn on N.Sch.2799 with DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} the last time he was at Derby. We suggested that luggage carriers, unless fitted with proper luggage boxes, were of very little use, also if it is necessary to remove the luggage and box bodily to get at the rear wheel, this scheme would be impracticable.

A luggage box built into the body appears to be gaining in popularity, and we suggested to DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} that if the box was built in with the body, i.e, actually let into the rear panel as/permanent part of thecar, he could save a certain
