GLEASON GEARS FOR CHASSIS PRIOR TO 1700.
Replying to your memo. Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}/NCR1/W23822.,
Mr. Royce approves in principle of the arrangement shewn on our R1219, but he would like it confirmed by a test before adopting it universally. It will be noticed that though it agrees in the method of taking the thrust with the arrangement used on the later chassis, the method of fitting up namely, the accurately fitting washer between the journal bearing and the boss of the universal joint,is more difficult than the scheme we proposed.
Mr. Royce would also like Mr. Hives to confirm that the method of taking the back thrust on the journal bearing is thoroughly reliable from the results obtained in the Experimental department.
