Dear Sir,

Chassis No. 14 B.V. - I.M. Waller.

I am in receipt of your letter of the 12th instant, Your Reference D/HP/Y12/JR{Mr James Royce}, and would like to mention that on the 22nd February I also heard from the General Transport Co., Ltd., 6/8, Crutched Friars, E.C. 3. concerning this Bentley car, and I have no doubt whatever that the chassis of the vehicle is already in this Country, and that the French body-work was left in France for repairs. The point is, however, that neither the French Customs nor the British Customs would have passed the car as a complete vehicle under cover of Carnet No. 289619 if the complete vehicle had not returned on the 15th August, 1938 and in this connection I would like to mention that our Representatives at both Dieppe and Newhaven have in no way made the situation difficult, because they have no jurisdiction in the matter. As I have mentioned above, both the French and the British Customs have to be satisfied that the car exported from France and re-imported to England agrees in every detail with the Customs Papers and I can assure you that had the Chassis alone been imported, neither the French nor the British Customs would have accepted Mr. Waller's Carnet and cleared it of its liability.

I explained all this to the General Transport Co. Ltd. and concluded my letter by pointing out that the loan of Mr. Waller's Carnet No. 289619 would not in any way assist with the clearance of the French body-work of the car when it arrived at Newhaven. I also enquired of them whether any documentary evidence could be produced that the British import duty had been paid on the French body-work of the car at the time of its original importation and I suggested that if such evidence could
