-2- NEW EXHAUST SYSTEM. This appears to be very good for noise. The exhaust on this car appears to me to be quieter than on any other Phantom II I have driven. It is not really possible to judge it for booming as this car is fitted with a touring body and collapsible hood and it would be interesting to try this system on a closed car, particularly one which has shown up bad booming with the standard exhaust system. The exhaust cutout on this car seized solid whenever cold, but it worked freely when hot. THERMOSTAT OPERATED SHUTTERS. This is one of the most pleasing features of the car, namely, that one does not have to think of shutter control on a journey. I would suggest that it would be better if it were adjusted for the engine to run hotter as at no time did the temperature exceed 70°. The shutters are inclined to stick but this may be due to mud on the mechanism or a matter of adjustment of same. The following are some further remarks on the general behaviour of the car. PETROL FILTER. During the journey we were held up twice with petrol starvation which seemed to be caused by the porous pot filter. We discovered on each occasion that the petrol was not flowing freely to the float chamber and after removing and washing the porous pot filter, the supply was quite adequate. SPRINGING. The springing of this car appeared exceedingly good for Continental work, cornering seems to be very safe at high speed. STEERING. This is exceedingly bad at high speeds on anything but smooth roads. The "kicking" of the steering wheel is most unpleasant, and I would suggest that this could be considerably improved by more damping in front by means of the shock absorbers. MAGNETO HIGH TENSION WIRES. I would suggest that these require more protection from the exhaust as they appear to have perished badly during the 10,000 miles test. OIL PUMP. This unit is very noisy when the engine is hot. It is the worst feature of the engine when running lightly. RADIATOR. In my opinion the Staybrite finish of this unit is very satisfactory. For three days we had the car in all sorts of weather including several heavy storms and there were none of the weather stains which one finds with a standard finished radiator. BODY WORK. The side screens of the body are very poor, they are distorted and rattle very badly and let in terrible draughts. The | ||
