CONTINENTAL PHANTOM - HIGH SPEED PERFORMANCE.

We have had an opportunity of testing two production Phantom II cars on Brooklands Track.

The cars were -

(1) 46-MY, which is a pre semi-expanding carburetter type standard car.

(2) 20-MY, the latest Continental Phantom II with semi expanding carburetter.

The following lap speeds were obtained -

20-MY - Cut out open (2 up) 86.62 M.P.H.
46-MY - No cut out fitted (2 up) 74.33 M.P.H.

We do not know the weights of these two cars but we should imagine that there is little difference between the two.

The windage is approximately the same in each case, being rather similar types of body.

The lap speeds obtained are what we should expect and the difference between the two is representative of the difference to be expected between the two types of chassis.

We obtained a value for the difference in lap speed due to cut out open and closed on 20-MY, the figures are as follows -

Cut out open - 85.72 M.P.H.
Cut out closed - 81.9 M.P.H.

The best half-mile and mile speeds obtained with 20-MY (cut out open) were

Flying half-mile - 90 M.P.H.
Flying mile - 88.67 M.P.H.
