Hdy.{William Hardy} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}9/KT. 2.3.33. ORIGINAL LUVAX SHOCK ABSORBERS. At the time when the decision was made that we should fit a proprietary make of shock absorber on the Bensport, we got into touch with the Luvax people and tried one of their dampers on our rig. The results we obtained were not satisfactory and we wrote them to this effect. Since that date they have taken on their staff a Mr. W.A.Green who was at the R.A.E. and he has been doing work for them on shock absorbers. The only shock absorber we have been interested in has been the one having the spring loaded valve as opposed to the orifice restriction previously used. We send you herewith three reports we have received from them, from which you will see that the rotor type shock absorber is capable of giving very good results. Owing to the very large angular movements through which the shaft can operate has the advantage that short lever arms can be used. We are sending you under separate cover the shock absorber on which the tests have been carried out. Will you please return this along with the reports at your earliest convenience. We expect we shall be at W.W. before long when we can discuss the subject generally. With regard to leakage from the damper glands we have the Lanchester car here which has now run 10,000 miles fitted with Luvax shock absorbers, and the loss of oil from these dampers has not been appreciable.
