OIL COOLER ASSEMBLY.

Dear Mr.Rowbotham,

I am sending you sections of the second assembly that we have had copper brazed and am pleased to say that the brazing this time seems to be very satisfactory. There were two main troubles, previously, as follows:-

Edges of Case: these were not sealed properly and we have overcome this trouble by improving the fit of the two cases and inserting a strip of copper-foil between the overlapping edges.

Steel Dividing Strips: these did not braze satisfactorily, principally due to the fact that they came too close to the radius at the edge of the holes. We cut back the corrugated segments slightly and made new dividing strips so that the strips bedded well away from the radius.

We also applied some local pressure during brazing.

I am sorry that due to the parts being slightly displaced during brazing, the block on which the assembly was rested has become brazed locally to the assembly, and we have had no option but to section the whole thing. This is not a trouble that would occur in production since if there were any risk of copper exuding we would interpose a thin layer of mica or some other material, which would prevent adhesion.

It is, I think, really remarkable how successful this copper-brazing process can be and it is difficult to see how else the construction could be effected.

I shall be glad to give you any further information or to make further tests.

Yours sincerely,
(C.H.Stephenson).
Technical Director.
