INDIA GEARBOX AND FLOORBOARD CLEARANCES.

Replying to BY/C7/H21126. and referring to your GL.{G. Linnett}172., we realised when sending AJS2/M141225. that it would still be necessary to recess the floorboards to a small extent, and if the amounts shewn on your drawing are found to be sufficient we should not object to this at all, but we do think a little more might be gained in the case of the front cover, by reducing its thickness by another .030 and reducing also the recessing in the floorboards by say half this amount so as to give a little more latitude for the discrepancies.

We were aware that considerable recessing in the floorboards would still be required for both the servo, and also over the change lever shaft bracket cover, and have in mind a scheme for getting some improvement in this position.

Referring to the 5th. para. of BY/C7/H21126. by "adopted without our knowledge" we meant to infer that we were not aware whether Derby had standardised the particular oil transfer scheme under consideration in place of, or in conjunction with it, or combinations of any of the other schemes we sent them round about the same time - that is - we were in the dark as to what had been finally considered as essential.

In considering the whole of this issue in connection with the lowering of floorboards as an intermediate expedient, while we are going into the gearbox design further, it would probably be advisable to reduce the height of the floorboards by half the amount that was originally intended, and also adopt what is shewn on GL.{G. Linnett}172. with the modifications as referred to above, in which case we believe there would be sufficient clearances for discrepancies and errors in fitting the floorboards, but we do not think this half way policy* unless we can say that it is some definite improvement upon what is already being done at present as standard. We do not believe that the screwed on plate indicated on GL.{G. Linnett}172. is absolutely essential, judging from any floorboard which was seen at WW.

* Should be adopted
