Reprinted from "Marylebone Mercury," September 29th, 1933. MOTOR NOTES. RESULTS OF "SPEED" PETROL TESTS. By CAR-MAN. The free petrol consumption test fortnight, open to the motoring public and sponsored by the Speedhire Service Garage Ltd., was concluded last Saturday and the results obtained are truly remarkable. A large number of car owners took the opportunity to test their petrol consumption accurately and in every case, under the strictest test conditions, Speed No. 1 Motor Spirit gave a greater mileage per gallon than any of the many other petrols tested against it. A few representative results are given below:— Make of Car. ... M.P.G. on own Petrol. ... M.P.G. on Speed No. 1. ... Increase. Austin 7 ... 55.2 ... 58.4 ... 3.2 Austin 10 ... 28.3 ... 32.3 ... 4.0 Morris Minor ... 46.4 ... 49.6 ... 3.2 Morris Oxford 15 ... 25.6 ... 29.6 ... 4.0 Invicta ... 19.36 ... 23.36 ... 4.0 Lagonda ... 23.36 ... 26.04 ... 2.68 Riley ... 29.6 ... 36.0 ... 6.4 Rolls Royce ... 18.4 ... 24.0 ... 5.6 Rover ... 24.0 ... 27.2 ... 3.2 The original signed test reports of the above may be inspected at any time at the offices of Speedhire Service Garage Ltd., Abbey Road, St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} John's Wood. It is worthy of note that the smallest increase of miles per gallon on Speed No. 1 during the whole fortnight was as much as 2.68 while the largest improvement was 6.4, the worst and best figures recorded having been quoted above. These results have been obtained by a special treatment of the spirit which promotes atomisation of every particle into a very dry and readily combustible gas. Consequently there is no wastage, every drop of petrol becoming vaporised, burnt and used to good effect. From this it follows quite naturally that in addition to an increase of miles per gallon, a general improvement in liveliness and all round performance of the car will result. This is particularly noticeable in the winter months when the dry gas nature of the petrol makes easy starting and quick get away, without excessive strangling, in the coldest weather, a simple matter. The first duty of every efficient carburettor is to produce and deliver to the combustion chamber the greatest quantity of gas from the smallest amount of liquid spirit and the conclusive nature of the tests has proved that Speed Petrol assists ably to this desirable end. As regards the clean running properties of Speed, a number of cars have been running exclusively on this spirit under observation for the past year and upon examination of their engines after having covered distances varying from 10,000 to 20,000 miles it has been found that carbon deposits in the combustion chambers are definitely no greater than with any other high grade petrol. The consistent high quality of future supplies of Speed Petrol is guaranteed by the Directors of the Speedhire Service Garage Ltd., all consignments being fully tested and balanced by skilled chemists, and motorists are invited to carry out similar consumption tests on petrol delivered direct from the pump at anytime by appointment. Finally, no inconsiderable point, the initial cost of Speed No. 1 at 1/3d. per gallon is much less than any other petrol approaching the same quality. This fact and the undoubted performance given by the spirit should make an instant appeal to every discriminating motorist. | ||
