standard, due to the low gear. On examination it was found that several teeth were stripped off the bronze wheel, and the worm was damaged. The case where it had broken looked a poor casting and an attempt had been made to weld with oxy-acetylene. The differential was badly worn, the 4 small pinions had worn very slack on their pins, also end play, the piece carrying the pinions had also been working in the housing. There were no bushes in the pinions, they were not hardened. The axle shafts which are stiffer than the present axle shafts were twisted by the brake application. The thrust ball races on the worm showed signs of having turned round, this was very slight, and no measureable wear had taken place. The rest of the axle was in very good condition. E.P. | ||
