rather an old point revived) was raised by Sir.H. yesterday.
He considers that flame trap burning is produced by the combustion of gum and dirt deposited on the trap by unfiltered oil escaping from the blower tail bearing. He has written you suggesting,

(a) that the oil flow be reduced,
(b) that a suitable filter be inserted in the oil line to the tail bearing.

Whether this suggestion is likely to effect burning I cannot say, but it would certainly reduce tendency to blockage of the trap.
(I actually wrote you making this suggestion on the 16th.January,1939 and also to Farmer, so this expedient may have already been tried without success).

Meanwhile I am going into the question of alternative materials for traps and hope to have a near opportunity of seeing you about gunnery and other outstanding matters whenever you have time to deal with them.

Yours sincerely,
