SHELL-MEX AND B.P. LTD Distributors for the Shell and Anglo-Persian Oil Groups Telephone: Temple Bar 1234 Telegrams: Shelbeepee, Rand London P.O. BOX NO. 148 SHELL-MEX HOUSE VICTORIA EMBANKMENT . LONDON . W.C.2 Handwritten: X/282 Your Reference..................... Our Department T.& R.{Sir Henry Royce} LGC/KCG Date 2nd June, 1933. Handwritten: YNG E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives, Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Mr. Hives, In reply to your telephone enquiry with regard to the amount of benzol which should be added to Shell D.T.D.134 spirit to obtain 80 O.N., I find it a little difficult to specify the exact amount in the absence of specific information as to under what type of test conditions the 80 O.N. is specified. I would say, however, that under Series 30 Test Engine with jacket temperature of 190°C. we consider that at least 20% benzol should be added to our present D.T.D.134 supplies which, as you know, already contain 10% benzol; alternatively the addition of 1.02 c.cs. T.E.L. would presumably bring our present D.T.D.134 fuel to 80 O.N. under the same test conditions.
