12H5 To Rolls-Royce Ltd. Derby..........Dr. Copy to C. London Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Derby Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} " H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} London Levallois Sr/VAI/ET.27.2.39 Re: CHASSIS 3.BU.144 - Lord SOMERS. With reference to By/SBI/MG.24.2.39, we confirm the conversation we had with Sb.{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister} this morning over the telephone, when we mentioned that a crankshaft had been received from the Works last Friday evening and that we had started to fit it. As explained on the telephone, we understand from H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} that Lord Somers called at Conduit Street last week and enquired when his car would be ready. C. has written to us to say that they have lent Lord Somers a car while his own is being repaired. This being the case and in order to gain time, it will be preferable to fit the new shaft and we are therefore proceeding with this work. We fully agree, however, with paragraphs 3 & 4 of your memo. Concerning the question of decarbonising, will Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} kindly let us know the date and mileage when the car was decarbonised at the Works. The driver informed us that the car has only covered about 8000 miles since it had an upper decarbonise. If such is the case, we do not think that it will be necessary to regrind the valves. We shall, however, remove the carbon from the cylinder head and pistons. You will, by now, have received a copy of our Sr/VAI/E 23.2.39, explaining where the failure took place, approx. 75 Kms. from Paris. Sr/VA. | ||
