Re. Deletion of Security Bolts for Tyres and Bolt Valves on Inner Tubes.
------------------
V4546

The question has been raised by BJ. as to whether it is in order for the bolt valve to be discontinued from inner tubes, as one or two customers have had trouble with tyres blowing off the rims, and also scrapping the tube after experiencing a puncture by tearing out the valve.

Referring to the Dunlop Rubber Co's letter of July 26th. 1922, we find there is no definite statement therein that the bolt valve would be discontinued, and the only paragraph in which the bolt valve is mentioned is the 9th. where the following passage occurs :-

"In this case, while we actually failed in "test to get the tyres to blow off, we did get them to "creep considerably, and the presence of security bolts "or bolt valve plates made no difference whatever to the "extent of the movement, or to the damage which was done "to the tube."

We shall be glad to have confirmation from the Dunlop Company that they definitely recommend, in addition to the deletion of the security bolts (which has been standardised) that bolt valves are also not only not necessary, but of no advantage.

This matter is likely to come up at the next Midland Hotel Conference.

P.S. Dunlop Tubes supplied for some time have not had bolt valves fitted - only the usual valve and a small plate which cannot be called a bolt valve. Again we are now quite good for balance.
