RE: CORROSION OF ALUMINIUM PARTS - PHANTOM II.

We have recently had two cases of the aluminium water connections at the bottom of the Phantom II Radiator corroding right through.

We have in India approximately 29 Phantom II cars and in view of the fact that practically all fresh water in this country is chlorinated as a protection against enteric, I feel very concerned that there may be other cases, and I feel that we should carry in stock in Bombay small quantities of all the aluminium parts used which come into contact with the water system, and would be glad to have your recommendations on this matter.

I would be very interested to know if this corrosion has been known to take place in other countries than India. We are of course familiar with the aluminium cylinder head tube trouble, and we carry stocks of the tubes and the plugs for replacement, but as far as I know this failure of the water connections is a new development.

I have today cabled for one water connection at the bottom of the Radiator and one Blank Flange to be sent by air mail for 132-GY, but quite apart from this order, I suggest that if you agree, you send us for replacement stock, two each of these parts and one water pump together with one set of the aluminium pipes and water connections complete with joint washers etc. Our official order will of course follow on your advising us what you are sending.

I am sending a copy of this memo to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}, and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} for information.
