To R.{Sir Henry Royce} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WoR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to L. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X7230, X7772 X7941 PHANTOM II MODIFIED EXHAUST SYSTEM. The aluminium parts of the exhaust system on 24-EX. car which is running in France, have collapsed. Both the front expansion box and front end of the rear silencer have failed. Although we have not yet seen the damaged parts, Hancock reports that they have collapsed due to heat. We have previously run a similar exhaust system for 10,000 miles in France, but that was in the cool weather with a fair amount of wet. During the present running they have had one or two exceptionally hot days. From the results it is evident that aluminium would be un-reliable material to have on the exhaust system.
