c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ----- "V" SERIES FRONT WHEEL BRAKES. ---------- Referring to De3/M.16.5.25, we agree that we had "N" scheme 1716 as you state, nearly eighteen months ago. It came of course at a time when we were struggling with an entirely different problem - angles of lock. On N. scheme 1716 you made a remark that the new scheme might be preferred to the one we were then working upon. We saw no particular reason for preferring it; there were no complaints in regard to the adjustment which was on, and it had been run successfully on the cars, and therefore, whilst we detailed the new scheme, we left it at that, and continued with what had already been instructed for production. It must never be overlooked that on all this four wheel brake stuff we have been working in parallel with the experimental work, on production, all the time, and therefore whatever has been adopted as standard, has continued as standard in the absence of complaints against it. If West WitteringHenry Royce's home town had expressed at that time a definite preference for the later scheme, we should of course have made a serious attempt to get it on standard quickly. There are difficulties in regard to the improved form of adjustment referred to, and whilst the old one cannot be adjusted without doing a certain amount of work, once it is adjusted and locked, there is practically no fear of it ever coming slack. In view of its absolute certainty, and in the absence of complaints, I saw no reason for modifying same. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} | ||
