X.4805 Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FEB 28 1921 RECEIVED Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} 34/F25.2.21. X.4805 RE. CARBURATION, - AND IMPROVEMENT TO MEET LOWER GRADE OF PETROL. With reference to R5/G22221, you will remember I brought to your attention such information as I had received privately from Mr. Hulley on this matter. As this point seems rather important, however, the following are the particulars reported to me by Hulley in connection with Springfield tests of induction pipes, exhaust heaters, etc.:- "We have had several days of weather below Zero F. {Mr Friese} and it's awful, to say the least of it. That brings me to our latest epidemic, bad carburation. We have been doing nothing else but test out, hot spots, high velocity pipes, etc. To start the story at the beginning, when Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} was here we first of all tried drilling holes through the rear exhaust box, and fitting about 3/4 bore pipe through, and then filling in the gaps in the end of hot air pipe flange so as to make sure of getting all the hot air possible to the carburetter. That was no use. Next we tried a 5/8 outside dia. pipe through the induction pipe longitudinally, and then passing exhaust gas right through. This, although an improvement, was not a complete success. After this we built up a jacket round the T piece of induction pipe, and passed exhaust gas in, through a 1/2" pipe and out through two 5/16" pipes. | ||
