re 40 m.m. Naval Gun Type BD.{Mr Berend}
Attachment to Oerlikon Mounting.

We have already tried the gun mentioned above on the Oerlikon mounting using our provisional scheme for the attachment brackets shown on PL.281.

On Q.PL.114 herewith (original attached to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH's. copy) we show a productionised edition of the experimental scheme. No fundamental changes have been made from the experimental scheme which was tested at Whale Island.

The plate brackets forming the new trunnions are made from .625 thick steel plate machined down to .6.

The design of trunnion is principally the same as that on the experimental scheme, with an axial adjustment by means of shims.

We are leaving Ve/NP/Robinson. to provide the necessary boss on the cradle and to detail the bush on the Rotherham oiler.

We are aware that it was suggested that a grease gun fitting should be provided at this point, and agree that this would be a good scheme.

At the moment we understand from Ve/NP. that there are no oilers on the gun and on the Oerlikon mounting oiling by means of a can is used.

We have considered using a cast hole in the Oerlikon head as a means of attachment for the plate brackets, but on measuring up the 2 heads at Sinfin we find that there is a variation of approximately ¼", in the position of this hole so we have left it alone.

The only machining on the Oerlikon head will be the drilling of the 2 holes on the support brackets and the spot facing for the bolt up bosses there-on.
