sidways towards the rear of the engine and apparently pressing hard on the retaining split ring. There was no sign of the split ring having fidgetted or displaced. The amount of carbon deposit on the piston tops was very small.

CONNECTING RODS LOP.E.55884.

The metal of the big end bearings was showing signs of cracking when examined. When previously there was no signs of cracks.

TORQUE REACTION DAMPERS LOP.E.53049.

The torque reaction dampers are apt to cause a knock, when the centre plate fastened on the frame is not square with the rest of the damper. The noise made is not metallic. It is a friction noise and can be heard and felt in the driving seat.

SPRING DRIVE LOP.E. 54745. LOW INERTIA.

Damping friction 20 lbs. at 17 1/4 Rad.
Driving spring load 17 lbs. at 17 1/4 Rad.

The half crankshaft period having become very noticeable indicated that the friction load of the damper had decreased. When the damper was dismantled the cotton fabrics were found in a very poor condition. The load had pressed the material making it spread outwards and was found in between the damper plates. New cotton fabrics have been fitted. The springs for the damping friction lead are compressed practically choc-a-bloc with the new fabrics. This condition will cause rapid wear of the fabrics to take place.

VALVES & FITTINGS LOP.E.55049.

EX.7642. Inlet Valves.

EX.7643 Exhaust Valves.

E/58625. Valve Springs.

There has been very little trouble with the valves throughout the mileage. Approx. .002" clearance has been lost with the exhaust valves. Inlets gave no trouble.

The inlet valv spring of No.6 cylinder broke two full tunns from the bottom after 11,696 miles. A spare spring fitted only lasted 500 miles. This broke two full
