to control voltage well when connected to a battery, but without giving the range of current between fully charged and discharged conditions that we should require, it would not appear to control voltage well on open circuit owing to the relatively large effect of the series winding when charging a battery. In other words, the voltage on open circuit was disproportionately high.

We thought just a few remarks about this piece of apparatus would interest you. The apparatus itself is crude but it was just the principles which it involves which we thought worth recording.
