To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Copy to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} RHO. Phantom III. Petrol Tank. We send herewith LeC 4948 showing a petrol tank for Phantom III of a new design, instituted to overcome the criticisms of the Expl. Department to the effect that the present tank will not deliver petrol on a 1 in 5 gradient and a 1 in 10 camber. This design is intended for future development. The tank body is made in two halves, the top portion being of the same shape and section as at present. The lower portion is a pressing. It is intended to suspend this tank by straps, the design for which will have to be supplied at some future date, and therefore the end plates can be of the same gauge material as the barrel. We have placed the float of the gauge at the centre of the tank so that the gauge will show always the amount of petrol which the pumps can suck. On the present tank the position of the gauge is bad in this respect. We show the gauge float with a central wire as we understand this has been asked for. This modification entails a modified flange to the instrument and a larger hole for the tank fixing. The suction pipe is put into the tank permanently.
