Dear Mr. Robotham,
Many thanks for your letter dated the 3rd inst. on the subject of bearing materials.
The information you have given us in regard to Satco is certainly very interesting, as from the preliminary work we have carried out with this material it appeared to be a most satisfactory proposition.
In paragraph three you refer to R.R. big end bearing material. Could you please advise us as to whether in this case you are referring to RR.56 or to the new material which is being discussed with our Chief Metallurgist at the present time? You state that we have had some discussion with Devereux on the subject of bearing materials and we are pleased to hear that you will be able to fix us up with some bearing material before long.
On the subject of cast crankshafts, I must inform you that we have not done very much work in this direction of late, but there is no doubt that it should be a definite possibility where low stress values are concerned. We do not think in our case the ratio of forging to finished crankshaft is as high as the figure quoted in your letter, but again, if the cast shaft can be obtained it will very much simplify production.
Mr. Devereux suggested that it would be advisable
