1175 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}4/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 10th June, 1938. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Spurrier, Esq., Jnr.{Charles L. Jenner}, Leyland Motors Limited, LEYLAND. Lancs. Dear Spurrier, Many thanks for the pleasant day you gave me yesterday. A piece of information which you said that I could have, but which I omitted to get before I left the Factory was the nitriding steel which you are using for crankshafts, and the relative cost of this compared with .4 carbon steel. I would be very grateful if you would also let me have two other figures:- (1) The weight of your 4 1/2-litre engine complete less clutch and electrical equipment, but with, presumably, induction manifold, carburetter and exhaust pipe. You will remember you gave me a prime cost for this unit of £62/10/-. (2) The weight of the gearbox complete of which you gave me the prime cost. The material figure for this box was £9/7/-. I am despatching to you two of the by-pass filters of which you spoke so that you may try one on a petrol engine and one on an oil engine. We shall be extremely interested to know the relative life of an oil engine compared with a petrol engine. With regard to tin-plating pistons, in case you have forgotten the name of the firm who are doing it, the Light Production Co.,Ltd.,60/66, Rochester Row, S.W.1 (Factory at Slough) are carrying out this work for us. There is no need to alter the piston dimensions. | ||
