Report on Visit of Messrs.Rubery Owen re Frames.
*******************************************

Mr.Buckley, Chief Draughtsman, and Mr.Girvin,Works Manager of the Frame Department of Messrs.Rubery Owen, visited our Works yesterday, Thursday, January 21st.1937. They came to hear from the Expl. Dept. of the difficulties experienced with frames Nos. 1 and 2 for Wraith II.

Wraith II.
**********

The first frame was of the thick gauge, namely .092" side channels with cross and cross members .064".

The second frame was of a thinner gauge material, the side channels being .080" and the cross and cross members .064".

They experienced difficulty with the second frame of thin gauge steel due to the spreading of the metal when spot welding, and require that we should increase the spacing of the spot welding as much as possible. We have arranged for the Production D.O. to instruct spot welding 1.5" spacing on straight portions and 1" spacing on bends for the third frame, and we asked verbally of Messrs.Rubery Owen that the third frame should be in the thin gauge. At the moment there is some delay in the delivery of further frames in that they have no material of either gauge, but this should come to hand during the next week.

It was decided at the request of HFS. that until the third or fourth frame all drilling should be left off, and that the front and rear ends of the frame be cut off leaving ¼” for trimming until such time as trimming jigs have been supplied to the makers, which again, we suggest, should be for the third or fourth frame.

It was mentioned that the third frame is urgently needed and should be speeded up as much as possible.

Bentley III.
***********

The frame for Bentley III was examined and Mr.Girvin was emphatic that the fitting together of the two side channels is not a practical proposition as in actual practice they cannot be made to fit. The pressure of the spot welding being only approximately 150 lbs. is not enough to pull the flanges
