Failures of 'Alpe' type disc couplings during dynamometer testing and a proposal for their strengthening.

On the dynamometer test tackle where disc couplings of the "Alpe" variety (cords moulded in rubber) have been used, we understand failures were frequent until shouldered distance pieces between the re-inforcing plates were used.

We therefore propose inserting similar pieces in the strengthened discs we are procuring, as these distance pieces will allow the spider bolts to be tightened up definitely, and not pull the reinforcing plates into the fabric and away from the rivet heads, as was noticed in one or two instances.

Although we think that the increase in strength and other features we are proposing to incorporate will materially benefit this coupling, we are in the meantime asking BY to make the pot coupling originally in this position, suitable for the first motion shaft taper end so as to have something to fall back on should we consider the disc unreliable.
