McKechnie - Sales}20.1.34. Goshawk Engines. Crankshaft with Balance Weights. We have to admit that we are very disappointed indeed with the results of the balanced crankshafts of the Goshawk type test engines numbers 3 and 35. After we had stripped Goshawk 3, the journal bearings were scored, the crankshaft scored, but we thought that it might be attributed to the oil containing foreign matter. The strip of 35 engine however shows the bearings to be in poor condition. On both these engines we are replacing the whole of the journal bearings before we start the 50 hours consumption test. Previously on lead bronze bearings we have run a complete type test and put the same bearings back again for a second type test. We admit that it sounds foolish to attempt to say that the balanced shaft should not give us better bearings. The facts are, however, we are very disappointed at the result of the first two type tests. We are getting out a complete report of all the running we have done and shall then be in a better position to analyze the results. We recommend that the Design look into the question of whether we can increase the amount of balance. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
