We give below a list of more general tests which
have been carried out with regard to explosions in the
silencer :-

(1) A leak was made in the induction pipe and
compensated for by strengthening up the low speed jet,
explosions obtained were more numerous and violent than
under standard conditions.

(2) Leak as above tried in various parts of the
induction system; wherever the leak may be the results are
always the same as in (1); the larger the leak the more
violent the explosions.

(3) Three exhaust valves set open by reducing tappet
clearances; no effect.

(4) All tappets set with sufficient clearance to do
away with valve overlap; no effect.

(5) High speed jet closed up; no effect.

(6) Petrol turned off before coasting downhill; no
explosions.

(7) Baffles fitted in all inlet ports and at the
joint of the carburetter to hot spot bend, to prevent any
petrol being sucked up the walls of the induction system;
this had no effect.

(8) Doris scheme done away with; no effect.

At the present time the conditions to be complied
with to reduce explosions to a minimum, as shewn by our
tests are :-
