Noise issues with the exhaust heated hot spot on the Phantom II.

We are in trouble with the scheme because when this is fitted we have not yet been able to overcome the noise from the exhaust passing through the hot spot. The noise appears to be due to the fact, we take the exhaust from one cylinder and a chuff of the exhaust passing through the hot spot can distinctly be heard under the bonnet. As we reduce this noise then we reduce the efficiency of the exhaust heating. The noise can be heard even if we stop up the outlet from the exhaust heated bend, that is the exhaust squirting into the capacity of the hot spot will make a noise which can be picked out. As the effect of the exhaust heated bend is going to be much more appreciated in U.S.A. than under our conditions, we took Mr.Olley out in an experimental car with the scheme arranged with the best compromise for noise and heat. He picked up the noise but considered that for their conditions they would prefer the exhaust heated bend with the noise rather than water heated. We wish to try one or two further schemes to reduce the noise because we should certainly get complaints if we add any additional noise. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
