SIX BROKEN VALVE SPRINGS & ONE BURNT EXHAUST VALVE.
9-YG.

In regard to the above customer's letter of April 20th, which I return herewith, we should point out that we have had very little trouble with valve springs generally, but judging from the number of his chassis, compared with about four others, we seem to have had a coil of wire which was below standard and which must have got through our regular tests.

We consider the material of the valve springs is distinctly faulty, having slight seams in same and we should therefore change these free of charge. As a matter of fact, I think we should send the customer a complete set of valve springs and ask him to return the remaining six, which upon receipt I wish the Shipping Dept. to send to me for examination.

In regard to the Exhaust Valve, this is a peculiar trouble, of which we have had two or three isolated cases and which, at the moment we are somewhat puzzled over. We are rather inclined to think it must be the result of a steam pocket occurring round the valve set, owing to casting effects which may be peculiar to two or three chassis. In order to be able to investigate this matter more thoroughly we would be distinctly interested in obtaining from the owner the cylinder block in which the trouble occurred and would like to know which cylinder in the block it occurred upon.

In pursuance of this idea, if the customer could make arrangements, we would like to have the car up at Derby, putting him on two new cylinder blocks, and handing over the cylinders in which the trouble occurred to our Experimental Dept. for them to thrash an engine thoroughly fitted with these cylinders to see if they can produce the peculiar valve fault in question. Later we would cut the cylinder up to carefully investigate the state of the casting internally. We do not think that the trouble in question is a preignition fault only, and therefore if we can make some arrangement with the customer to obtain the faulty cylinder we think it would help us considerably in coming to some definite conclusions in regard to this particular fault.
