WHEATLAND WORKS, SEACOMBE, CHESHIRE, ENG. 6th May, 1938. Dear Sirs, Your Ref.Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}3/R.{Sir Henry Royce} For the Attention of Mr. Martindale. Following on Mr. Ikin's interesting visit to your Works last week, we have had under consideration the installation of a machine for investigating the affect of speed on co-efficient of friction, along the lines of the machine which you have designed. At to-day's Board Meeting our Directors have sanctioned the necessary expenditure for the construction of a machine for the above mentioned purpose. We thank you for your offer of the loan of a back axle for use in the construction of the test rig, but we have decided to profit by the experience gained with your machine, and to try to improve upon it. We propose to employ a flat disc for the braking surface, with the object of overcoming the tendency for a brake drum to distort and thus vitiate the result. We also intend to try to arrange the graphical record so as to indicate the true co-efficient of friction, and not a relative value. It is gratifying to learn from your letter of the 3rd inst., that our "400" G.M.3. is giving promising results on your test rig, | ||
