( 3 ) Spring Drive LOP. E.86976. LEC.4475. Existing complete to above LOP. & schemes incorporating:- E.85120 Fan pulley, removed at 18,000 miles and replaced by new pulley for larger belt. The usual period at 50 m.p.h. on top gear was damped out by the spring drive and not noticeable during the mileage. A period at 70 m.p.h. in top and 50 m.p.h. in third was present throughout and at times was very noticeable. Connecting Rods. LOP. E.84691 (Marine Type) Existing complete to above LOP & schemes incorporating:- LEC.4913 Strengthened blade rod. E.86118 Blade rod. Oil holes to LEC.5042. 3 - Hoyts Z.S. Big end Bearings in Nos. 1, 3, and 5. 3 - Big end Bearings in W/Mt. Standard Production in Nos. 2, 4, and 6. Removed at 11,210 miles and replaced by new set of rods complete to standard production. A big-end knock was heard at 11,210 miles. Inspection revealed a quantity of white metal in the pressure oil filter. The connecting rods were dismantled and it was found that N° 6 forked rod and N° 4 blade rod bearings had run, in each case out of the cap. The other forked rod bearings all had pieces broken out and showed signs of hammering, with the exception of N° 5 which was in good condition except for slight cracks at one place. The other blade rod bearings were in good condition except for a very small piece broken out of N° 6. The general condition of Nos. 1, 3, and 5 in Hoyt's Z.S. was noticeably better than that of Nos. 2, 4, and 6 in W/mtl. Pistons. LOP. E.86708. New, complete to the above LOP. incorporating :- E.87347 Pistons. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}187 L.section piston rings in the 2nd ring grooves. Occasional piston knocks were noticed from N° 6 in "A" side. The pistons were examined after 11,210 miles. All the pistons on "B" side were marked on the pressure faces. N° B.4. was slightly scored. This was dressed up before replacing. The pistons and rings were in good condition in other respects.
