On the rear occasions when 100°c was exceeded due to sustained maximum speed, the oil pressure fell off rather suddenly, and at the maximum reached 105°c, it fell to 24 lbs/sq". At the start of the running the oil pressure at 10 m.p.h. and 80°c was 7 lbs/sq". This has fallen to 2 lbs/sq" by the end of the mileage.

The average oil consumption was below 900 m.p.g. and the exhaust became smoky after idling at the end of the mileage. The lubrication to the rockers was not standard.

The new type K.L.G. plugs were used, type 171. Trouble was experienced due to burning of the points, pre-ignition, and one cracked insulator.

Petrol supply failure due to both pump trouble and vapour was experienced and has received specialised investigation which is dealt with in a separate report by Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/J.B.Dixon.

Crankcase and Bearings LOP. E.87328.
Existing complete to LOP. incorporating:-
E.8/894 Crankcase T.H. and E.8/417 Crankcase L.H.
Cylinder liners in Nos. 1,3, and 5 "A" side, and Nos. 2,4, and 6 "B" side produced in I/O cast by RR.
All other liners Standard Production centrifugally cast.

They appeared in good condition, and no known trouble has been experienced with them. The caps of Nos. 1, 2, and 4 main bearings were removed for examination at the same mileage and found to be in very good condition.

Slight oil leaks were experienced on either side of the crankcase from the rear ends of the bottom half joint, and round the breaker and oil level indicator.

Crankshaft. LOP. E.86189.
