BENTLEYS ICKNIELD STREET BIRMINGHAM 18 OUR REF. AF/AL YOUR REF. RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}1/R.{Sir Henry Royce} DATE 27th September, 1938. Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., D E R B Y. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Martindale Experimental Department With further reference to yours of the 13th and ours of the 15th inst., we have now much pleasure in enclosing a report and photograph from the Premier Steel Co. in connection with Adjuster Spindle G.B.3272. This definitely confirms the verbal report the writer gave to your Mr. Leslie when he was over here last when we stated we had a feeling that one of our chargehands had used the wrong bar end. If you will kindly remember when we were machining these two spindles our Works were closed down for our Annual Holidays and Stocktaking and we only had a few operators in to finish off your job and there is no question that the chargehand had picked up the wrong bar end when our proper Steel Store's man had been away on holiday. We feel sure you would rather us tell you quite frankly how the mistake happened than try to do otherwise. We are frankly relieved to find that we have made the mistake and not our supplier. We should be glad if you will kindly return the report and the photograph but, of course, if you take a copy from same we have no objection. Hoping this meets your criticism and you can rest assured on production this mistake would not occur.
