The visit was paid to the above firm with the object of talking over their latest car heater, and Mr. Brinkworth in charge of this section was interviewed. Mr. Brinkworth showed us some rather better sketches of his heater in the Passenger Transport Journal of March 8th 1940, and expounded at length on the merits of his steam boiler system, and it's non-interference with the cooling system of the car. At the same time, however, we felt that the tremendous complications involved in fitting this job, more than outweighed its so called advantages especially on a car fitted with pressure circulation. We agreed, however, to take two of the heater units to be fitted up on our cars for test. These are expected to be delivered early next week. A second scheme of heating evolved by Mr. Brinkworth is simply that of taking air from behind the fan, blowing it through a jacket fitted around the exhaust pipe, and taking it from there to the interior of the car. This scheme it will readily be appreciated is simple, cheap and absolutely noiseless. In principal it is similar to a scheme already fitted on 25.G.VI. except for the exhaust heating. Mr. Brinkworth waxed so enthusiastic over this scheme that he persuaded us to accept one for trial, and gave us a demonstration on an Austin 10, where it must be admitted a fair amount of warm air was delivered. We do not feel, however, that the excrescence formed on the exhaust pipe would be acceptable to the majority of Rolls-Royce owners, though it might be possible to develop the idea to take away some of its unsightliness. The motors used for these heaters are made by Klaxons and it was admitted by Mr. Brinkworth that he did not anticipate a favourable comparison with our own R-R Marston heater from the point of view of noise. - continued - | ||
