re SHEET STEEL WING STAYS - PHANTOM.

-------------------------------

With reference to EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}2/28.3.27. our reply to the various points is as follows :-

1/-
We are informed by the Experimental Dept. that the front wings fitted to EAC.Vlll were supplied by Barkers, and the wing stays produced to N. Sch. 2136 apparently did not require any alteration. Evidently Barkers supplied wing stays to suit the above N.Sch. and not their own standard shape.

2/-
Our opinion is that the front wing stays for the "twenty" are much closer to the shape of the wings fitted by coachbuilders than is the case on the EAC.Vlll. It would appear that both Barkers and Hoopers have made the wings to suit the curvature of the R.R. wing stays in the two cases we are now dealing with.

3/-
The headlamp centres on the EAC.Vlll are 30¼", but there is not sufficient clearance between the lamp and the wing to enable the lamp to be cleaned in the case of a nickel plated one.

Barkers cannot of course fix the lamps at 30" centres with our present scheme when they use their dipper scheme, and as illustrated on their drawing No. 1141 the lamps are fixed at 28" centres at a height of about 15". On the same drawing is shown the curvature of the Barker and the R.R. wing stay.

4/-
In the case of the Barkers, we do not think that it is necessary for pockets to be provided in the front wings to enable the bonnet catch to be lifted, but in cases where the inside valance rises more steeply than Barkers and similar to EAC.Vlll then these pockets are required, but so far coachbuilders have not been given any information in regard to this, although this question was pointed out to WW. some time ago.

In regard to the question of moving the
