BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} ORIGINAL E2/M24.8.27. C. to BJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} PHANTOM VALVE GEAR. X8060 We send herewith drawing LeC. 2452., shewing a modified duralumin push rod for the valve gear. Sch. 1. is for application to the blue sports chassis, and Sch. 2. is a rod of larger diameter which requires an alteration to the cylinder head for its accommodation, the tubes passing through the head being of larger diameter, and eccentric, to avoid reduc- ing the gas way. We believe the present duralumin rods are not collapsing over their whole length, otherwise the rod would fail as a column. We believe the metal is giving way where the fitting abuts on to the end of the tube, and in the modified design the fitting is made to embrace the tube while the full area of the rod is used on the end without any reduction, this area inciden- tally being increased 50% in scheme 1., and 80% in scheme 2. Will you kindly issue the necessary instructions E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
