Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}8/AD29.10.31. ROLLED EYE CHEAPENED FRONT SPRING FOR 25 HP. These springs completed 5,000 miles in France on 19-GIV without any mechanical failure. We found, however, on inspecting them when the car returned that the lubrication to the spring eye was not functioning satisfactorily. This has always been a source of difficulty with rolled eye springs but we think there is no reason why it cannot be made to work quite satisfactorily on these cheapened springs and have therefore altered them and are re-fitting them to 18-GIV for the next 10,000 mile test. We cannot see any reason why they should given trouble again and therefore, whilst we are not standardising them until we have run a further 5,000 miles, we consider that we ought to order as few of the standard type of springs as possible until we can release the cheapened springs and so effect considerable economy.
