1116? Experimental Dept: Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}7/MH.{M. Huckerby} 11th. February 1938. The British Belting & Asbestos Ltd., 59, Southwark Street, LONDON, S.E.1. For the attention of Mr. Dalmaine. Dear Sirs, Further to our discussion of the 10th. regarding the differences of friction poundage obtained with the original and new cotton duck washers we have carried out the tests as decided with most disappointing results. On the particular washers in question which only gave 10 lbs. at 1 1/2" rad. friction the inner 5/16" width of material was cut away, this making the inside diameter 4 3/8" and gave a load of only 10 1/2 lbs. By inserting the one good old washer, the load was between 13 and 14 lbs., so that as far as we can see left, is the fact that the old washer is stiffer than the new in its structure. Based on these results and the fact that you could not guarantee consistent reproduction of the old washers we have instructed for stronger springs for trial in bringing up the poundage with the new washers to the required figure. We should, however, be pleased if you could help us further in this matter of the differences obtained. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
