LOCKHEED-GATES BOOSTER
THE Lockheed-Gates Booster is a regenerative braking device of the type which employs a torque-producing mechanism deriving energy from the vehicle's momentum, and as it is hydraulically operated and controlled it is far more sensitive than any previous booster of this type. It has the additional advantage that it may be run at propeller-shaft speed and can thus be installed immediately behind the gearbox without the provision of a reduction drive.
Although primarily designed for use with the Lockheed hydraulic system, the Lockheed-Gates booster is equally adapted for use with mechanical brakes, a slight internal modification being all that is necessary.
As will be seen from the illustrations, the design is such that when the brake pedal is depressed the multi-plate torque device is energised, the torque produced being transferred to a master cylinder through a mechanical system consisting of a drag chain and quick threaded sleeve; the master cylinder in turn operates the braking
