317 Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}7/R.15.12.37. CARBON CRANKSHAFTS FOR P.III. With reference to the attached Project Sheet the circumstances are as follows:- We want a Packard type of crank to save cost in forging. We want increased bearing area on the main bearings to improve bearing life. We want carbon steel to reduce the cost of material. We could combine all these features in one crankshaft. The crankshaft will necessitate a new crank-case in order to accommodate the increased bearings, but if the experiment fails the crankcase can be made standard. In any case, we have got to have a new cast crankcase shortly in order to accommodate the design from which the oil cooler has been deleted. We believe that the several advantages enumerated above justify us going ahead immediately with this project with a view to getting it on the Continental P.III before it goes to France. If we do not get it on this car we have no idea when we shall get a chance of another test. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
