X766 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from CJ. Copy to E.R. Re Heating of Water. CJ2/E12/9/24 With reference to your memorandum concerning the heating of water, it would appear to my lay mind that it would be waste of time and money to carry out experiments on the road in the south of France or Italy, in view of the important discoveries you have made. We now know that our present system can be improved. What we shall want to know is whether, when our present system has been corrected in the light of recent discoveries, the improvements are notable in practice. It would seem that the fan belt is not sufficient to make the fan thoroughly effective at high engine speeds. Doubtless this is one point which could be improved. It may seem desirable that louvres should be on the top of the bonnet. However, these are engineering matters about which I know nothing but I suggest that we should learn nothing practical by running a car with the present fan belt in the south of France or in Italy towards the end of September.
